According to the Australian College of Physical Education, dance has many benefits for children. It helps improve their flexibility, coordination and strength, and can be a great way to gain confidence, make friends and learn valuable social skills. In dance classes, children will learn to watch, listen and take turns - all skills that will benefit them throughout their lives!

Dance is also great for mental health, providing an emotional outlet and stress relief for children. Plus it’s good fun, and the best kind of exercise is fun exercise. This doesn't just apply to little ones. People of all ages, genders and abilities can benefit from dancing.

YMCA Victoria is a proud partner of Premier’s Active April – an initiative encouraging people to get active for 30 minutes a day throughout April. This is with the view to help people form healthy habits and continue to get more exercise in their lives, which is something the Y is seriously passionate about.

Through this partnership the YMCA offers free 10-pass cards for participants to access our recreation and leisure centres across the state. But there are a number of other partners and awesome benefits that signing up brings.

So how can you get your family involved in dance this Premier’s Active April?

Everyone who registers for Active April is able to attend up to five group dance classes at your local DanceSport Victoria centre. Check the list of classes to find family-friendly sessions, or attend a session by yourself or with a friend! When you register, you automatically go into the running to win five more group dance classes and a pair of dance shoes from DanceSport, as well as heaps of other great prizes.

Throughout April, another huge event happening in the dance world is Big Dance. There are free workshops on over the whole month so you and your family can learn the dance moves in the lead up to the Big Dance on Sunday 29 April 2018. Workshops are open to all ages and abilities, and many are wheelchair accessible. Take the kids along for a fun and free family weekend activity. Check out the My Local page on the Active April website to find events near you.

Don’t forget that when you register for Premier’s Active April you receive a 10 Visit Pass Card for your local YMCA Centre, so you can keep active in many ways throughout the month!
